Most people are even incapable of forming such opinions. Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions that differ from the prejudices of their social environment. But the ends themselves are conceived by personalities with lofty ethical ideals and - if these ends are not stillborn, but vital and vigorous - are adopted and carried forward by those many human beings who, half unconsciously, determine the slow evolution of society. Science, however, cannot create ends and, even less, instill them in human beings science, at most, can supply the means by which to attain certain ends. Socialism is directed towards a social-ethical end. A hundred times every day I remind myself that my inner and outer life are based on the labors of other men, living and dead, and that I must exert myself in order to give in the same measure as I have received and am still receiving.
